The Nine Grahas (Planet)

Vedic astrology does not use the outer planets (Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto) because they are not visible to the naked eye and are considered too slow-moving to impact the immediate, personal karma analyzed in traditional Jyotish. Instead, the system uses two luminaries, five visible planets, and two “shadow” planets:

The Luminaries (Royal Planets)

Surya (Sun): The king of the planetary cabinet. It represents the soul (Atmakaraka), ego, vitality, father, authority, and one’s core outward identity.

Chandra (Moon): The queen. It represents the mind (Manas), emotions, mother, intuition, and psychological receptivity. In Vedic astrology, the Moon is often considered the most important planet for daily predictions and calculating planetary periods (Dashas).

The Five Visible Planets (Tara Grahas)

Mangal (Mars): The commander-in-chief. It represents courage, physical strength, siblings, ambition, aggression, and technical skills.

Budha (Mercury): The prince. It represents intellect, speech, commerce, logic, communication, and learning.

Brihaspati / Guru (Jupiter): The teacher or minister. It represents wisdom, wealth, children, dharma (righteousness), expansion, and divine grace. It is considered the most benefic planet.

Shukra (Venus): The minister/advisor (specifically to the Asuras in mythology). It represents love, beauty, wife/partner, worldly pleasures, arts, and vehicles.

Shani (Saturn): The servant or judge. It represents discipline, delay, sorrow, hard work, longevity, and karma. Saturn forces individuals to face reality and pay their karmic debts.

The Shadow Planets (Chhaya Grahas)

These are not physical planets but mathematical points where the Moon’s orbit intersects the ecliptic (the Sun’s apparent path). Eclipses happen at these points.

Rahu (North Lunar Node): Represents material desire, obsession, sudden gains, worldly attachments, illusion, and foreign influences. It acts like an unquenchable thirst.

Ketu (South Lunar Node): Represents detachment, spirituality, liberation (Moksha), past-life karma, and hidden wisdom. It is the force of letting go.
